Session 7: Think Differently About Risk
All investors want to mitigate risk. We want our assets to stay safe and secure. We want to guard against certain unknowns. But if we continually hedge against risk, then our life—and our investing—becomes nothing more than a hedge.
Risk should push us into greater dependence upon God and less reliance on ourselves.

Because of Christ, we can think differently about risk. Instead of obstacles, we see opportunities. Instead of hazards, we begin to recognize hope. God shows you the need. He provides the capital … and we can place all of our worries and concerns at the foot of the cross.
Work through these 3 questions:
Henry suggests that much of our investments amount to a hedge…does that resonate with you? What do you find yourself hedging against?
What would happen if your investment portfolio halved because you took risks for the Kingdom of God? How do you get direction on the type of risk that God wants you to take?
One of the greatest hedges we have is holding on to our resources, keeping them in the “storehouses”. What would change in our investment philosophy if we had more of an “empty the storehouse” mindset?
3 Ideas to Explore the Mark Further
There’s no limit to the ways you can explore the Marks of a Faith Driven Investor. What we provide below are five ideas we think might lead each one of us to an even greater understanding of our identity in Christ.
Consider: As Christ followers we have a mandate to love our neighbors. With 8 billion of God’s image bearers living all around the world, what does it look like for Christ followers to faithfully follow God’s lead at a time when it goes against governmental policies? Because of Christ, we can think differently about risk. Instead of obstacles, we see opportunities. Instead of hazards, we begin to recognize hope. God shows you the need. He provides the capital … and we can place all of our worries and concerns at the foot of the cross.
Act Differently: Consider strategically utilizing Donor Advised Funds (DAF) for faith driven direct investments, including investments in emerging and frontier markets. Reach out to Impact Foundation (US audiences) or TrustBridge Global (non-US audiences) to learn more about how you can innovatively use your DAF to make impact investments. If you don’t have a DAF, contact National Christian Foundation (US audiences), Stewardship (UK audiences), or TrustBridge Global (non-US/UK audiences) to learn more.
