Session 6: Solving the World’s Greatest Problems

For the past few decades, ministries have struggled to bring enough capital and sustainable solutions to the table to address the world’s greatest problems. Philanthropic capital can certainly be a tremendous help, but it will never be enough on its own.

To disrupt maliciously intentional rings of evil, we need to deploy investable capital from families and institutions. We need to get serious about bringing our best models to disrupt.

If we truly believe that God indeed does own it all, then we can change the stewardship conversation. And our focus moves to the virtuous cycles where more can be reinvested to tackle even bigger problems. Here are a few more questions to help your group go even deeper in discussion.

  1. What do you think about the need to have “for profit models” and to generate profit to solve the world’s greatest problems? How can we do both? As an investor, how can you deploy capital for both market return and philanthropic benefit?

  2. Solving the World’s Greatest Problems has identified 30+ issues of particular devastation. Do any of these resonate with you?

  3. We briefly mentioned Donor Advised Funds as a method for leveraging investable capital. What are the benefits and barriers of DAFs? What step can you take today to get going with this type of investment vehicle if it’s right for you?

Go Deeper

There’s no limit to the ways you can explore the Marks of a Faith Driven Investor. What we provide below are three ideas we think might lead each one of us to an even greater understanding of how we can Redefine Return.

  1. Consider: So, how do we avoid the temptation of the barn builder while embracing the wisdom of the talented servants? One modern tool is the Donor-Advised Fund, or DAF. A DAF is like a charitable investment account. You contribute cash, securities, or other assets, and those funds can be invested for tax-free growth. You then recommend grants to your favorite charities over time.

  2. Act Differently: Invite your spouse and family members to join you in a free online Journey of Generosity (JOG) retreat hosted by Generous Giving (for US audiences) or Generosity Path (for non-US audiences) where you'll have a safe space to process your relationship with money and generosity.

  3. Learn From Others: Visit faithdriveninvestor.org to learn more or join the conversation by listening to our weekly Faith Driven Investor Podcast. Additionally, explore the Faith Driven Investor YouTube Channel for more stories and insights from like-minded investors around the world.
