Private equity describes investment partnerships that buy and manage companies typically before selling them again (although some of the funds below do not intend to sell companies after acquiring them). Private equity funds may acquire private companies or public ones in their entirety, but they typically do not hold stakes in companies that remain listed on a stock exchange hence the “private” not “public” portion of the industry’s name. There are an increasing number of Christ-following private equity fund managers seeking to bring their faith to bear in their stewardship of companies they acquire. Some best practices look like deploying things like chaplaincy or faith based employee resource groups into a company. Handing over more of the company’s ownership to employees, or winsomely seeking to preserve the faith and family values a mature business was started with as the next owner of the company. Private equity presents a unique opportunity for fund managers to influence culture through redemptive investing in what has traditionally been known as a purely-profit motivated and often exploitative means to drive investment returns.
